Once a year we welcome you to try our sport!
In February of each year we open our canoes to new members who want to get involved with competitive outrigger canoe racing on Saturday mornings generally at 10 a.m., but confirm with coaches at the beginning of the season. Our beach is located at the west end of the beach at 1 Whitecliffs Drive, Newport Beach. Our IMUA outrigger canoes are blue and orange, and located on the West side of North Star Beach.
The Open Enrollment period is from February through April. Novice practices are on initially Saturday mornings. Once the time changes in March, your coaches will advise you of the weekday schedule in addition to Saturday practices.
We welcome you try outrigger paddling out for free. After three times, and you’ve got the paddling bug, please join to continue.
We are a competitive team with two seasons: Iron and 9-man.
What do you need to bring?
- A great attitude
- Clothes that can get wet (it is a water sport!)
- Sunscreen
- The ability to tread water for 5 minutes (you might get wet …)
- A great attitude
- Either a strong base fitness level OR the commitment to improve your fitness (or both!)
- We supply the instruction, the canoes and (in the beginning) paddles.
